One of the upgrades we sprung for when building our Liberty 42 with Metricon was french doors off the side of the home to take advantage of the extra room we have on the side of our home. The Liberty is a relatively narrow home design, which lent itself to the splayed 650sqm block we purchased at Stonecutters Ridge. With a northerly aspect, this area of the home gets a bit of sun throughout the year – a blessing on most days, though on the hot side during a scorching Aussie summer.
Our answer was a merbau wood pergola – custom-built and designed by myself and my father. He’s an engineer, so it was totally over-engineered, but you know it’ll stand the test of time. CAD designed to the n’th degree, this style was chosen to complement the plantation style of our home. It was by no means the cheapest approach to providing shade to this area, but we felt this provided the look and feel we have strived for from the beginning of the build process, and it will no doubt give us yet another area of the home to enjoy to the beautiful summer evenings in – all the while watching our kids run through the sprinklers in the backyard, playing on the slip n slide, or throwing birthday parties.
