What makes Sydney so great?

Sydney from the James Craig

Everyone knows of Sydney. It’s a popular tourist destination, a popular destination for immigrants, and has even been voted the world’s best city a few years running. But why? What makes Sydney such a magnet for anyone that visits Australia? When we decided to build our home we looked around at a number of different locations across Australia. If there’s ever a good time to make a move, this would be it. As you can see, we decided to stay put in Sydney, even with the outrageous cost of living.

As the world tries to cope with the economic crisis, Australia is dealing with its own problems. A comparison of median house prices with median household incomes in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Britain and the United States found that Australia had the most cities in the “severely unaffordable” category – where house prices are more than five times the median income.

Sure, the cost of living has dropped slightly, aided by the falling petrol prices, but with the unemployment figures rising, and there’s no real relief in sight for the housing market, why do people stay? Why is Sydney somewhere that many people don’t dare leave?

I’ve been living here for just over two years and, compared to the States, life in Sydney (and Australia) has both strong positives and negatives. But really, it’s what you make of it.

So, here’s a few reasons why I believe, it’s worth putting up with Sydney’s high cost of living. (and in no real particular order)

Off-lead dog park? Yes please

At Stonecutters Ridge there’s a nice big field to kick the ball around. They’ve even built a nice playground. They’re definitely catering to the new families that will be moving in to the neighbourhood. But what about the families with dogs?

Two big movie premieres in two days. Why Sydney?

I’m a pretty big movie buff, and a hardcore trekkie (nerd alert!) to boot. Last night, at the Sydney Opera House, J.J. Abrams and the cast of the new Star Trek movie had their world debut. The red carpet was rolled out, reporters were everywhere, but sadly, I was unable to attend.
Today, Hugh Jackman and the cast of the new X Men Origins movie are premering the movie at the famous Cockatoo Island, in the middle of the harbour – one of set locations for the movie.

So why Sydney? Is it because each film features a prominent Australian actor (Star Trek has Eric Bana, while Xmen has Hugh Jackman)? Is it because of the favourable exchange rate between the American and Australian dollar? Or is it because Sydney is truly a destination city, and people (actors and directors included) want to find an excuse to travel here?

Whatever it may be, Sydney seems to have been getting a lot of press lately. It’s a good thing too, the Australian economy needs all the help it can get, and showcasing two big movie world premieres in some of the most scenic parts of Sydney is likely to do some good. As for the movies, I’m excited to see both, but Star Trek – that’s the one I’ll be in line for on opening night. Yes, I’m a trekkie. And proud of it.

Who’s to say you need a good camera to take nice photos. On a beautifully warm night in The Rocks, I took this shot with a point and shoot camera (Canon A520) while bracing myself against wooden pier.
