Hot Air Ballooning at Stonecutters Ridge?

Hot air balloon above Sydney AustraliaIt appears that Stonecutters Ridge is already a destination for sightseers. Early this morning as I was getting ready for work, I took a step outside to have a look at some of the progress we made over the weekend in our garden and noticed a hot air balloon floating high above in the sky.

A few minutes later, after heading in to make a coffee I returned, to find that the balloon was attempting to make a landing in the open field near our house – where houses will eventually be built.

It was an interesting start to the week.  I should talk to the guys at the sales office. They were giving tours of the new lots in Stage 2 by car over the weekend. Maybe a hot air balloon is the way to go…?

Richard ‘Dick’ Winters, ‘Band of Brothers’ inspiration, dies at 92

Major Dick WintersBand of Brothers, the acclaimed mini-series from HBO, is go-to favourite in my Blu-Ray collection. In addition to dramatizations of Easy Company’s exploits, including the invasion of Normandy, the miniseries featured documentary interviews with the company’s surviving veterans, providing an all too realistic angle to the horrors of war.

Amongst the other veterans of Easy Company, Major Richard Dick Winters was the fearless leader that did his best to bring his men home safe.

Last week, on January 2, 2011, Maj. Winters died at age 92, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

As commander of E Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Winters and his company proved instrumental on D-Day in ensuring the successful American landings at Utah and Omaha beaches. He would later lead his paratroopers through the forests of France, Belgium and Holland before ending his war in Hitler’s alpine retreat.

I’m not generally a fan of TV mini-series, but if you haven’t watched Band of Brothers (or its follow up, The Pacific), you’re missing an excellent piece of television genius.

Gingerbread Extravangza

Gingerbread HousesWith the family here, and the Holiday celebrations in full swing, there’s nothing like the taste, smell, and sight of a well decorated gingerbread house to put you in the mood for Christmas.

Thanks to an amazing neighbour, the women and children of the neighbourhood got together and went to town decorating these pre-made gingerbread houses to within an inch of their lives. Some extravagant, but all delicious, these houses won’t stand a chance. They’ll be gone by the end of the week I’m sure.

Stonecutters Ridge Community gets some attention

Stonecutters Ridge BBQ

Whether you’re already a resident of Stonecutters Ridge or just showing some interest in the development, you might be familiar with the Community Website. The Rouse Hill Times sure is. After our BBQ back in September was a resounding success in gathering the future residents of Stonecutters Ridge together, the newspaper published a story around how the community website that my neighbour and I created has already brought the community together in a way very rarely seen.

It’s nice to know we’re doing something positive for the community, and people are taking notice…
